Job Detail
- Waste Collection: Following assigned routes and schedules to collect garbage, debris, and recyclables from designated bins and containers.
- Loading and Unloading: Manually lifting and carrying heavy trash bags/bins (up to 50 lbs) and loading them into the collection vehicle, or operating automated or semi-automated hydraulic lifts to empty contents into the truck.
- Operating Equipment: Operating the packing or compacting mechanism on the garbage truck and potentially driving the collection vehicle along the route if possessing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Disposal: Transporting collected waste to a designated landfill, transfer station, or recycling center for proper processing and disposal.
- Maintenance and Safety: Performing routine inspections and basic maintenance checks on the collection vehicle before and after routes. adhering strictly to all safety protocols and regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Area Cleanliness: Ensuring that collection areas, including the street/curb and the truck, are kept clean and free of spills or debris.
- Communication: Interacting courteously with the public and team members and reporting any issues, delays, or incidents to supervisors.
- Required Skills and Qualifications
- Physical Stamina: The job is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift heavy objects repeatedly, work on one’s feet for long periods, and navigate stairs.
- Work Ethic and Reliability: The ability to work early mornings and in all types of weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) is essential, as collection must be constant.
- Safety Awareness: Knowledge of and adherence to safety procedures, especially when operating heavy machinery and handling potentially hazardous materials.
- Teamwork and Communication: Most collectors work in teams, requiring effective coordination and communication with drivers and other crew members.
- Basic Education: A high school diploma or GED is of10required, but not always a strict prerequisite.
