Job Detail
  • Operates light equipment such as regular pickup, dually truck or crew truck in sanitation truck and maintenance activities.
  • Assists with loading, unloading, and transporting solid waste, recyclables, yard debris, and bulky items.
  • Performs manual labor duties such as lifting, sweeping, shoveling, raking, and debris removal along routes and public areas.
  • Follows established collection schedules and ensures that debris and materials are properly secured and disposed of.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment by checking fluids, tires, lights, and general operating condition. reports any mechanical issues.
  • Performs daily cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assists with right-of-way cleanup, storm debris removal, and general maintenance of sanitation areas.
  • Observes all city, state, and departmental safety procedures and traffic regulations.
  • Maintains effective communication with supervisors and crew members regarding assignments and route completion.
  • May be required to work staggered shifts, on-call duty, weekends, or during inclement weather conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of sanitation and solid waste collection procedures.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of light equipment such as tractors, or small trucks.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices related to equipment operation and sanitation work.
  • Ability to safely operate assigned vehicles and equipment under varying conditions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in adverse weather.
  • Ability to follow oral and writ10instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Skill in identifying and reporting mechanical or safety issues.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Minimum of 1(1) year experience in light equipment operation, sanitation, construction, or related field preferred. LICENSE REQUIREMENT Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee driver’s license with a clear driving record. Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is not required but is preferred. Must obtain CDL Class B within 5 months of hire. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, AND REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside-weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Work performed in operating light equipment such as tractors, mowers, bush hogs, sewer trucks, small bulldozers, trucks, etc., and hand tools in a variety of maintenance and construction tasks when assisting other public works departments. Some heavy lifting and pushing up to 25 lbs. to 50. lbs. required. Subjected to extended periods of physical exertion while shoveling and digging. Good hand-eye coordination is required in the operation of large, heavy equipment, especially when operating around construction on right of ways and in tight situations. Exposed to all kinds of weather conditions and loud noises. Must be able to operate a sanitation truck.
