Job Brief
Position summaryunder the general supervision of the head mechanic, the mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, inspection, and operation of the town’s fleet of public works vehicles and equipment.

Job Detail
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair all Public Works vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
  • Operate diagnostic tools and reference manuals to identify and order replacement parts.
  • Conduct welding, cutting, and fabrication tasks as needed for equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Operate acetylene torches and other tools for cutting and fabrication.
  • Drive and operate all Public Works vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs.
  • Construct or modify tools and equipment to support department operations.
  • Collaborate with drivers and staff to ensure equipment is safe and ready for use.
  • Follow all safety protocols and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Respond to emergency repair needs, including roadside assistance and unskilled labor during emergencies.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in welding, cutting, brazing, and heating metals.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  • ASE Certifications in:
  • Gasoline Engines
  • Diesel Engines
  • Drive Train
  • Brakes (including air brakes)
  • Suspension and Steering
  • Required Education, Licenses, and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Rhode Island CDL Class B license in good standing.
  • Hoisting Engineer’s License (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • Minimum of 2(2) years of experience in fleet and construction equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Successful completion of a Town-administered mechanical skills test and interview.
  • Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, bending, twisting, stooping, and reaching.
  • Occasional kneeling, squatting, crawling, and climbing.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. frequently. occasionally over 50 lbs.
  • Constant grasping and handling of tools and equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces under vehicles and equipment.
  • Working Conditions
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be available for overtime, including nights and weekends, during severe weather or emergencies.
  • Pay: $25.73 – $30.99 per hour
  • Expected hours: 40 per week
