Job Detail
  • Operates and maintains various machines, equipment, vehicles, and hand tools including those with a rated capacity of more than 26,000 lbs., loaders, crawlers, excavators, front-end loaders, paving machines, graders, backhoes, sweepers, plows, sanders, mowers, chainsaws, chippers, shovels, brooms, and rakes.
  • Improves roadways and related infrastructure. cleans, repairs, and builds drainage and collection systems. applies asphalt, gravel, and other materials. removes snow. treats roads and walkways. installs and repairs guardrails and signs.
  • Performs ground and roadside maintenance. mows grass. cuts and chips brush. removes leaves, trash, and debris. trims trees and shrubbery. pulls weeds.
  • Maintains cemetery and prepares for burials. removes and replaces sod and loam. installs and repairs foundations and monuments. places markers.
  • Maintains, sets-up, repairs, and cleans vehicles, equipment, tools, grounds, and facilities. ensures items are secured and maintained in an orderly manner. may perform welding, grinding, and sharpening.
  • Builds walls and culverts, installs gabions, and performs concrete work.
  • Paints buildings, cross walk lines, stop lines, and parking lines.
  • Supports set-up and clean-up of Town events such parades, voting, and Town Meeting.
  • Coordinates with other employees as needed to ensure jobsite safety and accomplish tasks in a productive and timely manner. Communicates project status and barriers to supervisor. May make technical decisions in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Maintains current knowledge of techniques and requirements related to essential functions and required licenses.
  • Responds as assigned to urgent or emergency incidents, including snow and ice response.
  • Performs other related job duties as required.
  • SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 1 to 3 years of public works or related construction and maintenance experience, including heavy equipment operation. or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience.
  • LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License required.
  • Class 2B Hoisting License required.
  • Class 2A-4E-4G Hoisting License helpful.
  • KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS
  • Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the principles, procedures, techniques, infrastructure, and equipment essential to the construction, maintenance, and repair of roadways and grounds. Working knowledge of snow and ice removal techniques and practices. Knowledge of field safety.
  • Abilities: Ability to perform strenuous physical labor under varying environmental conditions, over long shifts, and during stressful situations. follow detailed oral and writ10instructions. follow proper methods, procedures, and safety precautions. determine proper amounts of materials, tools, and equipment needed. operate light, heavy, and special motor equipment. make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment operated. read and understand maps, blueprints, and instructions.   • WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt, or grease. Work may be continually performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. May be required to be on call for 24 hours or be under prolonged pressure during emergency situations.
