Job Brief
The fleet maintenance mechanic is responsible for maintaining dumpster today’s complete fleet of trucks, trailers, and dumpsters to the highest standards of safety, performance, and appearance.

Job Detail
  • Oil filter changes Fuel, air, and cabin filters Coolant transmission service Brake inspections Hydraulic system checks
  • Conduct quarterly PM inspections for every truck, even if mileage thresholds haven’t been met.
  • Maintain PM schedules in Docket or approved fleet software, logging date, mileage, service type, and parts used.
  • Ensure every PM service includes signed documentation and parts traceability. Always keep on-hand enough oil and fuel filters to service the entire fleet in 1day if required.
  • 2. Parts Fluid Inventory Management:
  • Responsible for ordering, tracking, and restocking all fleet parts, fluids, and consumables.
  • Maintain a clean, organized stockroom with labeled shelves for common parts (filters, belts, hoses, fittings, brake pads, DEF fluid).
  • Track consumption of parts and fluids weekly. report usage trends to the Branch Manager.
  • When any part fails, order 2replacements — 1to repair the issue and 1to stock for future failures.
  • Maintain bulk quantities of DEF fluid and monitor its consumption per vehicle to identify abnormal usage or leaks.
  • Verify delivery receipts and reconcile all orders against invoices to control cost.
  • 3. Daily and Weekly Inspections
  • Oversee driver DOT-compliant daily pre-trip inspections.
  • Conduct weekly yard inspections for leaks, tire wear, body damage, and safety issues.
  • Address and document all issues promptly.
  • 4. Tire Program Tracking
  • Inspect all tires weekly for tread depth, pressure, and wear patterns.
  • Maintain a tire log with serial numbers, install dates, mileage, and disposal records.
  • Rotate every 10 000 miles or per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Track and report tire expenses monthly.
  • Re-torque lug nuts after installations and confirm spare tire readiness.
  • 5. Repairs Diagnostics
  • Perform light-to-moderate in-house repairs (brakes, belts, batteries, hydraulic leaks, lighting, DEF systems).
  • Diagnose engine and electrical codes with approved tools.
  • Coordinate major repairs with authorized vendors and monitor turnaround time.
  • 6. Expense Control Reporting
  • Maintain a monthly maintenance and inventory report covering parts, fluids, labor, tires, and vendor charges.
  • Source from preferred vendors and compare pricing against budget.
  • Submit monthly fleet summary to the Branch Manager and Corporate for review.
  • Identify recurring failures or high-cost items and recommend long-term solutions.
  • 7. Dumpster Fleet Maintenance Brand Standards
  • Oversee the entire fleet of dumpsters in addition to trucks and trailers.
  • Washing: Wash every dumpster at least twice per year to remove dirt, odor, and debris.
  • Repairs: Inspect each dumpster monthly for cracks, rust, or door damage. repair as needed.
  • Repainting Branding: Repaint and re-sticker dumpsters as needed or every 3 – 5 years to maintain Dumpster Today colors and logos.
  • Yard Visits Inventory: Visit each yard at least once per week to verify inventory counts and ensure dumpsters are service-ready.
  • Yard Cleanliness: Confirm drivers do not dump loads in the yard.
  • Special Dumpsters: Dump appliance and tire dumpsters as needed.
  • Backlog Support: Assist with dumping overflow dumpsters from prior weeks when volume exceeds capacity.
  • Turnaround Rule: No dumpster should remain in the yard longer than 24 – 36 hours — dump, clean, and return to rotation immediately.
  • 8. Fleet Cleaning Presentation
  • Wash each truck and trailer at least twice per week.
  • Clean wheels, windows, mirrors, and decals.
  • Pressure-wash beds and remove grease as needed.
  • Maintain consistent branding and professional appearance for every vehicle.
  • 9. Recordkeeping Compliance
  • Maintain maintenance logs for every truck, trailer, and dumpster (see Section 12.8).
  • Keep records for the life of each asset. transfer records if sold.
  • Retain receipts and parts invoices for warranty and audit verification.
  • Cooperate with corporate audits and provide documentation on request.
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • 100 % on-time PM completion.
  • 95 % or higher fleet uptime.
  • 0 preventable roadside breakdowns per quarter.
  • 100 % dumpster inventory accounted for weekly.
  • Yard dumpster turnaround within 24 – 36 hours.
  • Fleet cleanliness inspection ≥ 90 %.
  • Accurate parts and fluid tracking with ≤ 5 % variance monthly.
  • Qualifications
  • 3 + years diesel or heavy-equipment mechanic experience.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, electrical diagnostics, and DOT compliance.
  • Welding and fabrication skills preferred.
  • CDL preferred but not required.
  • Must lift 125 lbs. and work outdoors year-round.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented.
