Job Detail
- Performs journeyman level work in carpentry and construction work.
- Performs general carpenter work in the repair, maintenance, construction or alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, doors, windows, or other similar structures.
- Instructs and supervises individuals in custody in the carpenter shop.
- Builds and erects wood scaffolding or forms needed for concrete construction projects and repair of existing structures.
- Perform incidental pattern making or cabinet work.
- Obtains job costs, estimates, and submits them to the institution’s Stationary Engineer Chief.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of those duties enumerated above. Minimum Qualifications Requires knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to completion of 4(4) years of high school.
- Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter. Preferred Qualifications Prefers at least 2(2) years of experience in the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of the trade.
- Prefers at least 1(1) year of experience instructing beginners in the trade.
- Prefers at least 1(1) year of experience in directing unskilled workers.
- Prefers at least 1(1) year of experience in the use and care of equipment used in carpentry.
- Prefers at least 1(1) year of experience in the ability to read, interpret, and work from plans, simple drawings, or sketches.
- Prefers at least 1(1) year of experience in simple arithmetical computations and/or bulk estimates of materials needed. Conditions of Employment Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
