Job Detail
- Read and interpret detailed structural steel blueprints, shop drawings, and erection plans.
- Understand welding symbols, dimensions, tolerances, and connection details.
- 2. Fabrication and Assembly
- Measure, cut, drill, and prepare steel components using torches, saws, and magnetic drills.
- Fit beams, columns, braces, gussets, handrails, stairs, and platforms according to drawings.
- Assemble and align components precisely prior to welding or bolting
- 3. Layout and Measurement
- Use measuring instruments (tape measures, squares, levels, plumb bobs, etc.) for accurate layout.
- Mark reference points, hole locations, and cutting lines on steel members.
- 4. Welding and Cutting Preparation
- Prepare joints for welding (beveling, cleaning, grinding).
- Work closely with welders to ensure proper joint fit-up and sequence.
- 5. Rigging and Handling
- Safely rig, lift, and position large steel members using overhead cranes or hoists.
- Signal crane operators and ensure proper balance and alignment of loads.
- 6. Quality and Safety
- Inspect completed work for dimensional accuracy, alignment, and fit.
- Follow all site safety procedures, including PPE usage, housekeeping, and fall protection.
- Knowledge and Skills
- Advanced knowledge of structural steel components and connection types.
- Proficiency in layout, alignment, and fitting techniques.
- Familiarity with shop and field fabrication tools (oxy-fuel, grinders, drills, squares).
- Strong understanding of welding processes and weld joint preparations.
- Ability to work from both paper and digital plans.
- Good mathematical and spatial reasoning skills.
- Physical and Work Requirements
- Capable of lifting 50+ lbs and working in physically demanding conditions.
- Ability to stand, bend, climb, and kneel for extended periods.
- Must adhere strictly to all safety protocols.
- Experience and Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED. vocational or trade certification preferred.
- Certifications:
- Forklift or overhead crane operation certification (a plus)
