Job Detail
  • Operate sweepers, drain cleaners, mowers, and associated equipment for road maintenance and construction.
  • Use a loader to load dump trucks with construction materials or snow and ice control materials.
  • Drive dump trucks to transport equipment, tools, and construction materials to work sites.
  • Operate snowplows and machinery for salting and snow removal.
  • Perform manual labor on assigned projects when not operating equipment.
  • Wash and service trucks daily with water, gas, and oil.
  • Monitor instruments while operating the vehicle and take routine corrective measures if a malfunction is indicated.
  • Assist mechanics in performing minor repairs to equipment.
  • Perform first-echelon maintenance daily.
  • Perform other related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of automotive equipment operation principles.
  • Knowledge of Pennsylvania traffic laws.
  • Understanding of the component parts of automotive vehicles and their functions.
  • Skill in operating single-chassis trucks or equipment of equal complexity on highways, in traffic, and under adverse climatic conditions.
  • Ability to learn to service motor vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and writ10instructions promptly and efficiently.
  • Ability to instruct and direct other employees in equipment operation and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods under adverse climatic conditions. PREREQUISITES FOR THE JOB
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: One (1) year as an Equipment Operator E-1 OR
  • Two (2) years of experience operating trucks or construction equipment, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. License: Possession of a valid Pennsylvania CDL, Class B driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Other Requirements: Must meet approved physical and medical standards, as determined by the Township’s physician.   • Work is performed mainly outdoors in all types of weather, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.

  • Work is performed under the general supervision and instruction of a supervisor or leader.
  • Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment to provide various services.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb in and out of vehicles and equipment several times a day.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, kneel, and walk for extended periods.
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination to operate equipment safely and precisely.
  • Must be able to follow all safety procedures and traffic control guidelines to protect self, coworkers, and the public.
  • Specific vision requirements include no less than 20/40 vision in each eye (with corrective lenses if needed) to read signs, markings, and equipment controls.
  • The employee must be able to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform job duties.
  • Work involves conditions that can only be partially controlled.
