Job Brief
Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the improvement, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of county grounds, including parks, park and recreation facilities and buildings, sports fields, open spaces, landscapes, playgrounds and equipment, irrigation systems and controllers, and weed abatement; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power driven equipment; and performs related work as required.

Job Detail
  • Performs maintenance, repair, and construction activities of County grounds and related facilities to ensure safe and efficient access for the public, including parks, recreation buildings and facilities, sports fields, and open spaces.
  • Inspects assigned County grounds and facilities for maintenance needs and safety concerns.
  • Estimates quantities needed and recommends selection of plans for annual or permanent planting areas.
  • Performs turf maintenance duties, including watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, aerating, renovating, and fertilizing turf.
  • Performs shrub and flower bed maintenance, including planting, watering, fertilizing, and maintaining landscaped areas such as bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs. performs weed abatement using a chemical sprayer. installs sod and/or sows grass seed.
  • Trims and prunes bushes, trees, and shrubs to provide clearance of sidewalks and signs, as well as to ensure the continued health of the bush, tree, or shrub.
  • Mows and edges lawns, ball fields, and other turf.
  • Removes fallen trees, stumps, fallen limbs, and related debris resulting from storm damage and general conditions.
  • Irrigates lawns and other planted areas using manual and automatic irrigation devices. Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the irrigation system. changes and adjust heads. maintains controllers. participates in performing irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.
  • Identifies and corrects irrigation, disease, and other plant problems.
  • Paints park buildings and other facilities. removes graffiti in parks and in other areas. power-washes hard surfaces.
  • Rakes leaves and clears debris from walkways, fields, and other facilities.
  • Clears snow from sidewalks and applies sand or salt as needed.
  • Cleans and maintains restrooms. stocks restrooms with necessary supplies. repairs toilets, urinals, and faucets as needed.
  • Assists in the set-up and removal of equipment and facilities needed for special events.
  • Monitors and adjusts all park water usage for maximum water conservation.
  • Operates and maintains specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment and hand and power tools related to the landscaping, maintenance, and repair of County parks and related facilities, including trucks, lawn mowers, weed eater, edger, blower, hedge trimmer, etc.
  • Installs, adjusts, and repairs sprinkler systems and related plumbing, including valves, valve heads, time clocks, piping, etc. assists in other plumbing repairs as needed.
  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Maintains public facilities, shop, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
  • Maintains accurate logs, reports, and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Attends training, meetings, workshops, etc., as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Interacts with and provides information for public and County workers.
  • Receives and acts upon complaints, referrals, and concerns from the public. responds to and performs work in emergency situations as required.

  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of: Groundskeeper I: Basic principles, practices, tools, and materials as they relate to groundskeeping.
  • Basic mathematics and arithmetic.
  • Safe driving rules and practices.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff.
  • Ability to: Groundskeeper I: Perform basic groundskeeping work.
  • Troubleshoot groundskeeping problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.
  • Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work.
  • Learn applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic writ10reports of work performed.
  • Understand and follow oral and writ10instructions.
  • Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.

  • Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be Groundskeeper I: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.   • PAY AND/OR SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL A Road Worker shall receive a twenty-5($0.25) cent per hour pay differential for each hour assigned to perform as a heavy equipment operator, when that assignment exceeds 5(5) hours in any given standard tour of duty.* Employees who work 4(4) hours or more in a shift beginning between 8:00 pm and 4:00 am receive a shift differential of $8 per shift. *Upon successful completion of 160-hour training program.
  • Social Workers, Social Service Supervisor I/II, Program Managers, and Deputy Directors receive a 5(5%) percent salary differential.
  • HCU employees who work between 6:00 pm and 7:00 am receive a shift differential of $3 per hour. The shift must start at 2:00 pm or later and applies to hours actually worked between 6:00 pm and 7:00 am.

  • 11:00 pm to 7:00 am shift – $9 per shift ON-CALL PAY Assigned personnel shall receive on-call pay of 6dollars and 15cents ($6.15) per hour for each hour served on on-call duty. Assigned personnel become ineligible for on-call pay once activated to call back status. Assigned Animal Control Officers receive on-call pay of 2dollars and seventy-5cents ($2.75) per hour from the time they are released from active duty but not before the regular conclusion of shift, until they are back on active duty or the Animal Control workday starts. For each call back, the Animal Control Officers receive overtime pay from the time they leave their home until the time they return to their home or commence their workday. CALL BACK PAY Call-back compensation shall be paid for 1and one-half (1½) hours at straight-time rates for each call-back occurrence and is in lieu of any travel time and expense to and from home and the first or last work contact point. UNIFORM ALLOWANCE Animal Control Officers receive an annual uniform allowance of 5hundred dollars ($500). Fifty percent (50%) of the allowance is payable during the period of July through December and fifty percent (50%) is payable January through June of each fiscal year. Fire Prevention Inspectors receive an annual uniform allowance of 7hundred dollars ($700). Fifty percent (50%) of the allowance is payable during the period of July through December and fifty percent (50%) is payable January through June of each fiscal year. An annual uniform allowance of 1hundred fifty dollars ($150) each fiscal year paid twice a year in January and July will be provided for the purchase of boots, coats, shirts, hats, uniforms, gloves, gators (snake proof), overalls or coveralls. Items of clothing will reflect the County logo or wording identifying the employee as a County employee. This section applies only to the following classifications: Appraiser, Building Inspector, Environmental Health Specialist, Planner, Solid Waste Technician, Solid Waste Specialist, Junior/Assistant/Associate Engineers, Engineering Technicians, Land Surveyors, Code Compliance Investigators and Agriculture Air Pollution Inspector. A uniform allowance of 4hundred dollars ($400) per fiscal year paid twice a year July and January each fiscal year will be provided for the purchase of prescription safety glasses, safety boots, a safety coat, shirts with a County seal replica, trousers, hats and gloves. Employees in the Road Operations Division, Skilled Trades and Maintenance Division who require corrective lenses for the normal execution of their job duties receive reimbursement towards safety glasses every 2years.
